Who we are

The impetus to start a Nephrology forum at Delhi came from the formation of Indian society of Nephrology in Jan 1979 at Bombay with Dr P D Gulati attended as one of the founder members. It was in November I 1979 that a few senior members decided to form this forum thus Delhi Nephrology society was formally founded at a meeting held at AIIMS , at the initiative of Late Prof Hari Vaishnava, then HOD department of medicine Maulana Azad medical college New Delhi , Prof KK Malhotra Dr Mrs. Sarla Vaishnava Dr P.D. Gulati Dr. Ramesh Kumar Dr. S.N.A Rizvi were the founder members: Prof K.K. Malhotra was named president,Dr Ramesh Kumar- Vice President , Dr. P.D. Gulati-Secretary ,Dr S.N.A Rizvi -Treasurer. It was emphasized at the meeting that a word should be sent around other institutions /Hospital of Delhi through the respective HOD so that interested faculty can join the forum

Objective

Objective of DNS were to fold increasing awareness amongst the physicians about the specialty of Nephrology to promote advances in management, training and research in renal disease. It was decided to adopt the constitution of Indian society of Nephrology with minor modifications, membership fees was kept Rs. 100 only. It was decided to hold regular quarterly clinical meetings by rotation in different hospitals. An annual event called Nephrology Update with active involvement of Urology colleagues and other para clinical departments like pathology, radiology etc. were planned to be held in January- February every year.

First Clinical Meeting

First Annual Nephrology Update was held at AIIMS in Jan 1981.These updates hosted by different hospitals like MAMC,Army Hospital, Hindu Rao Hospital, AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, Jaipur Golden Hospitals by rotations were held regularly every year, Total of 14 nephrology updates were held till 1994.DNS organized the 14th update at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in January 1994,Dr D.S.Rana was Convenor. Nephrologists from at joining cities like Chandigarh, Meerut, Agra, and Lucknow were invited to deliver lectures. Their expertise was appreciated and invoked good discussion, Participation by the post Graduate from different institution was encouraged: They were asked to give suggestions regarding improvements from the future update at the end of the program. The update sessions were invariably preceded by annual Dinner where beside the DNS members participating Faculty, Senior Teachers from the collaborative departments were invited with their spouses. Full Write-up’s, all the lectures/Discussions were always published as proceedings of the update. Financial help for academics activities of DNS was always forth coming from the Pharmaceutical Firms.

DNS Organize two special large scale CME Programs one for the family physicians (in collaborations with DMA) in September 1983 at Hotel Kanishka & Second with the urology group from different hospitals at MAMC Held in December 1998, these were well attended & appreciated by all.

DNS with the help of institution members hosted lectures/Group Discussions, Several eminent nephrologists from overseas delivered lectures & participated in update sessions held at AIIMS /MAMC.,Prominent amongst these included Prof.DAK Black, Dr.John Swinney (Transplant Surgeon) Dr.R.Wilkinson, Dr.R.Uldall, Dr.Barat: These expert were visiting the country and were invited through there contact DNS/ISN Members.

Dr.P.D. Gulati with the generous help .cooperation and active involvement of Prof.K.K.Malhotra, Dr.(Mrs) Sarla Vaishnava, Dr.Ramesh Kumar,Dr (Col) Yashpal, Dr.R N. Shrivastava.

Dr S N Rizvi and Dr.M.N Palley was instrumental in nurturing the academic activity of DNS. over span of 14 years till 1994. From late 80s onwards several colleagues like Dr S.Das, Dr S.C Tiwari, Dr D.S Rana, Dr A.K Bhalla,N.K Mehra, S.N Mehta, Dr Harsh Johri, Dr R.V.S Yadav, Col Akhil Mishra, Dr Rajesh Agarwal, Dr S.J Khan, Dr Arvind Bhagga, Dr Sanjay Agarwal, Dr Sanjeev Saxena, Dr Umesh Nautyal, Dr S.C Chabbra, Dr Ashwina Gupta played a key role in infusing lot of enthusiasm and helped furthering growth and popularity of DNS. The Membership rose to 35 in 1994

At the transplantation front, concern about increasing trend of an unrelated donor transplantation .DNS Members held group meeting even sought the help of DMA for press conferencing and Drafted guidelines for the hospitals undertaking renal transplantation and sent a memorandum to the Lt Governor of Delhi. Pleading that process of passage of the organ transplant bill must be hastened.in this connection public seminar on the 'Future of Kidney Transplantation' was organized in the DNA auditorium on 12th march 1995.Where several DNS member. DMA council member and legal experts participated. Illegal unrelated kidney transplantation was total condemned by all. Members applied to audience not to encourage and come forward with family donor. Several patients and their relatives to attended the meet discussed about their problems and wanted the 2nd Degree Relatives and Emotionally related friends as kidney donors to be legalized

Executive Committee

On 23rd 1994,Dr P.D Gulati, convened a general body meeting of DNS in The LTI of MAMC to hold fresh election, following where unanimously elected office bearers, Dr P.D Gulati (President), DR S.C Dass (President Elect), Dr R.N Shrivastav and Dr S.N.A Rizvi( Vice President), Dr S.C Tiwari(Secretary), Dr D.S Rana (Treasurer),Dr S.K Agarwal (Joint Secretary) .
